200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training

PERU

Yoga and Service Retreat!

6 Nights - July 5-11, 2020

Join us as we head to Peru for a Yoga and Service Retreat! We are so excited to add a very special element of Seva (Service) to this experience as we take our yoga off of the mat and volunteer as a group at a local children’s educational program designed to give underprivileged children the chance of a better future.

The more that I have traveled around the world, the more I realize how much more impacted I am when I do volunteer work in the local communities I am visiting. Every experience has left a huge imprint on my heart, which is why I am looking forward to bringing a group to share in these similar experiences!

This retreat is a time to experience something new, dig into the Peruvian culture and traditions, give and serve with love and compassion and nurture yourself through yoga, meditation and mindfulness.

Each day will begin with a yoga, meditation and mindfulness session before we head out as a group to the Picaflor House Community Project.

The very last day is an optional, add on group adventure to visit Machu Picchu!

This retreat is for those of you who are looking to have a meaningful experience, are open to adventure, ready to step outside of yourself and serve and are excited to experience the Peruvian culture.

We'll be staying at the

Picaflor House Community Service Project

Yoga Retreat Peru Seva

We will be volunteering as a group for 3 hours each day, Mon–Thur at the Picaflor House Community Project located in the village of Oropresa, 1 hour and 15 minutes away from where we are staying.

Many of the children in this area live in extreme poverty, and Picaflor House provides a safe place to go after school, as well as various classes, activities, and a healthy snack and lunch to support their nutritional needs.

Picaflor House was founded from a need to provide a safe place for children to go outside of school hours. This is a big problem in Cusco where parents are forced to work long hours to be able to financially provide for their families.

In mountain villages like Oropesa, many of the children would not eat lunch and would often be found on the streets after school as their parent would be working. This leaves the children in a vulnerable and unsafe situation.

Picaflor House provides the following to help improve the lives of the children and give them a better future:

A Safe Place

Many of the parents work long days, so the children are often left alone and vulnerable after attending government school. Picaflor House provides a place for the children to go in the afternoons where they can play, learn and be safe.

Academic Education

Picaflor House supports the children in their academic education by providing classes in mathematics, reading, writing and communication. Homework help is provided as many of the parents are unable to help the children with their school work. This all gives the children the best chance of achieving excellent academic results and thereby create better employment and future educational opportunities.

Non-Academic Activities

Picaflor House provides the children with additional activities that many children in Peru do not experience in the school system. At Picaflor House, the children learn arts and crafts, sports, music, traditional dance, chess and computer skills. This provides the children with the joys of a variety of fun and stimulating non-academic activities.

English Classes

Many of the parents ask if we can teach the children English as they understand the doors that will open for their kids if they are able to speak English. Cusco is a very touristic town so English language skills provide Picaflor’s children with a skill that will enhance future employment opportunities and help them to stand out from other job applicants.

Kindergarten Programme

With many of the parents in the village needing to work long hours to support their families, there is a need for childcare to allow the parents to work, the children to be safe and siblings not to be burdened with caring for toddlers.

Nutrition

Many children living in poverty do not have a variable nutritional diet. This is often the case in villages in Peru where children often eat a limited variety of food. Picaflor House provides the children with a healthy snack and lunch to support their nutritional needs.

As a group we will be assisting with activities like...

  • Assisting local staff preparing for classes
  • Assisting to teach English classes
  • Helping out with arts & crafts, games and sports
  • Assisting children with their school homework
  • Assisting local teachers with math, reading and communication classes
  • Helping to supervise children on local excursions and outings
  • Assisting in cleaning classrooms and playgrounds
  • Assisting with general maintenance around the project
